What is Vedic Astrology?
Vedic astrology — also called Jyotish — has been practiced in India for thousands of years. Unlike the Western astrology most Americans know, it uses the sidereal zodiac, which is aligned with the constellations as they actually appear today. That's why your Vedic sign is often one sign earlier than your Western one.
A Vedic birth chart (a Kundli) maps the Sun, Moon and planets at the exact moment and place you were born, across twelve houses that describe areas of life such as career, relationships and home.
Why Nakshatra Matters
Beyond the twelve signs, Vedic astrology divides the sky into 27 Nakshatras — smaller “lunar mansions” the Moon passes through roughly once a day. Each has its own symbol, ruling planet and character.

What is a Nakshatra?
The sky is divided into 27 Nakshatras, or lunar mansions, each about 13°20' wide. The Nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth is one of the most personal details in a Vedic chart.
Is a birth time required?
Yes. Your birth time sets your Ascendant and your houses, which change roughly every two hours, so the more accurate the time, the more accurate the chart. A birth certificate or hospital record is the best source.
What is a Kundli?
Kundli is the Hindi word for a Vedic birth chart: a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets were, relative to your birthplace, at the moment you were born.
What are Dashas?
Dashas are planetary periods. The Vimshottari Dasha system divides life into chapters ruled by different planets, which Vedic astrologers use to discuss timing.
What is Gochar?
Gochar means transits — where the planets are in the sky today, and how their movement relates to the placements in your birth chart.
