How We Calculate Your Chart
Every AstroNakshatraPath report rests on three distinct, clearly separated layers — real astronomy, classical Vedic astrology, and AI interpretation. We never blur the three together.
Layer 1
Astronomical Calculation
Where every planet actually was, at your exact birth moment and place — pure physics, computed by ephemeris software. No astrology, no opinion.
Layer 2
Vedic Astrology Rules
Classical, centuries-old Vedic conventions — signs, houses, nakshatras, dashas — applied to those real positions to build your chart’s structure.
Layer 3
AI Interpretation
Astro Gannu AI turns your chart’s structure into plain-language explanation — writing sentences, not deciding facts.
The AI does not invent your planetary positions. It interprets the calculated chart.
Layers 1 and 2 are fixed before Astro Gannu AI ever sees your chart. It cannot move a planet, change a house, or shift a dasha date — it only explains what’s already there.
Layer 1 — Astronomical Calculation
Real Astronomy, Not Approximation
1.Swiss Ephemeris
The astronomical engine behind this entire site. Swiss Ephemeris is a widely used, high-precision planetary positioning library (built on data originally from NASA’s JPL) — the same category of tool professional astronomers and observatories use to know exactly where a planet was at any moment in history. We use it, not a simplified formula or a lookup table, for every chart we calculate.
2.Astronomical Planetary Calculations
Given your birth date, time, and place, Swiss Ephemeris computes the real, physical position of the Sun, Moon, and the five classical planets (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn), plus Rahu and Ketu (the Moon’s lunar nodes — the points where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic, treated as shadow points in Vedic astrology). This step is pure astronomy — the same regardless of which astrological tradition someone follows.
3.Sidereal Zodiac
We use the sidereal zodiac — signs measured against the actual, fixed background of stars — rather than the tropical zodiac (measured against the seasons) that Western sun-sign astrology typically uses. This is the standard choice in Vedic (Jyotish) astrology, and the reason your Vedic Moon sign or Ascendant can differ from a Western horoscope’s.
4.Lahiri Ayanamsa
The sidereal and tropical zodiacs have drifted apart over millennia (a slow wobble in Earth’s axis called precession). The “ayanamsa” is the correction applied to account for that drift. We use the Lahiri ayanamsa — the official standard adopted by the Indian government’s calendar reform committee, and the most widely used ayanamsa in Vedic astrology today.
Layer 2 — Vedic Astrology Rules
Classical Structure, Applied Consistently
Once the real positions from Layer 1 exist, classical Vedic conventions — the same ones astrologers have used for centuries — turn them into a structured chart.
5.Lagna (Ascendant)
The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your exact birth moment and place. It anchors your entire chart — every house is counted from here.
6.Rashi (Moon Sign)
The sidereal zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your birth. In Vedic astrology, the Moon sign — not the Sun sign — is traditionally the primary reference point for horoscope readings (this is what “Daily Horoscope by Moon Sign” on this site refers to).
7.Nakshatra
One of the 27 lunar mansions the zodiac is divided into (each spanning 13°20’). Your Janma Nakshatra — the one your Moon occupied at birth — carries its own ruling planet, deity, and classical significations, and is central to Vedic astrology in a way sun-sign astrology has no equivalent for.
8.Pada
Each Nakshatra is further divided into 4 padas (quarters) of 3°20’ each, adding finer resolution to a placement than the Nakshatra alone.
9.Bhava / Whole Sign Houses
The 12 houses (bhavas) represent life areas — career, relationships, wealth, and so on. We use the Whole Sign house system: the sign containing your Ascendant is your 1st house in its entirety, the next sign is the 2nd house, and so on — the oldest and, among Vedic astrologers, the most widely used house system.
10.Graha (Planets)
The 9 classical “planets” of Vedic astrology (Navagraha): Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu — each with its own sign, house, and nakshatra placement in your chart, each carrying its own classical significations.
11.Vimshottari Dasha
A 120-year cycle of planetary periods (mahadashas) that Vedic astrology uses to time when a planet’s effects are most active in your life — calculated from your Moon’s exact nakshatra position at birth. This is why two people with similar charts can still be in very different life periods.
12.Antardasha
A sub-period within each mahadasha — a more granular slice of timing, giving a second planet’s influence layered on top of the ruling mahadasha lord’s.
13.Gochar (Transit)
Where the planets are positioned right now, relative to your natal Moon sign — distinct from your fixed birth chart, which never changes. Gochar is what our Daily/Monthly Horoscope and each paid report’s “Current Transit” section are built from.
Layer 3 — Interpretation
From Structure to Plain Language
14.Vedic Astrological Interpretation
Classical Vedic astrology attaches traditional meaning to the combinations Layer 2 produces — which planets are well-placed or challenged, which periods are traditionally considered supportive or testing, and so on. Where our reports state this kind of rule-based reading (planetary dignity, Dosha checks, Gochar favorability), it comes directly from published, widely-cited classical conventions — not invented on the spot.
15.AI Interpretation
Astro Gannu AI (built on Anthropic’s Claude) writes the explanations you actually read — turning “Jupiter in your 5th house” into a warm, specific paragraph about what that tends to mean for you. The AI is instructed to work only from the real, already-computed chart data above; it is never asked to calculate a position, and it says so plainly if a question needs data it doesn’t have, rather than guessing.
